This week, the Gaza Freedom Flotilla will embark on it's journey, the largest international effort ever, to break the siege on Gaza by sea. Ewa Jasiewicz, of the Free Gaza Movement, one of the organizers of the flotilla, provides excellent commentary on the international coalition which includes 10 ships, 5,000 tons of reconstruction materials and medical equipment and over 700 passengers from 50 different countries.

The Gaza Freedom March may have passed, but Palestinians in Gaza continue to march for their freedom on a daily basis. They are protesting the illegal, Israeli buffer zone, pretty much every day now and the IDF has not held back in their response. Today, a young Palestinian protester was shot and killed by an Israeli bullet, while peacefully protesting the theft of his land.

Israel has threatened to carry out a major military offensive against Gaza, demanding an end to the firing of rockets from the area.
It follows Thursday night’s attacks, by Israel, which destroyed a cheese warehouse and cinema complex. Three Palestinian children were among the injured.

16-year old boy shot dead by Israeli snipers

This afternoon the Israeli military killed 16-year old Mohammad Qadus from Iraq Burin, a village south of Nablus, with a live round on his heart. A second youth, Asaud Qadus, 19 years old, was critically injured after being shot in the head. Mohammad was trying to carry Asaud to safety when he was hit.

Last week, Sheikh Mohamed Sayed Tantawi, Alazhar University's top cleric, passed away of a heart attack at the age of 81. He was indeed a very controversial figure both within Egypt, as well as the Muslim world as a whole. As Egypt scurries to find a replacement for Sunni Islam's most prestigious seat of Islamic learning, many are wondering what this means for the future of Al-Azhar, its role, and whether it has been hijacked by the state. Will this be an opportunity for alternative movements to come into play? Or will it once again, be more of the same?
